TRANSATLANTIC TRAVELS FOR SATS

Last week, Hugh Goosen and Pelham Lessing represented the SATS Team at the ICETE (International Council for Evangelical Theological Education) 2018 Consultation in Panama City, Panama. At the opening ceremony, SATS was officially accepted as an affiliate member of ICETE, “in recognition of shared core values in the work of Evangelical Theological Education”.

After the Consultation, Hugh proceeded to Equador and Costa Rica, where he met with various SATS partners.

Meanwhile, back on African soil, Bev van Rensburg will be travelling to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, this week to attend the TW 2020 Global Leadership Summit.

NEW VOLUME OF CONSPECTUS

Volume 26 of Conspectus, the scholarly journal of the South African Theological Seminary, is out. This new edition features the following articles:

STARTING TERM 4 WITH PRAYER

As the new term begins, we would like to remind all our students that the SATS staff team prays for you regularly. May the Lord use the study materials and your interactions with fellow students and the SATS staff to transform your lives and equip you to be effective servants in His household. Moreover, we are aware that many of our students are striving to be equipped for ministry in the midst of extremely difficult circumstances and we pray the God will provide for your every need and carry you through to completion.At a recent staff morning devotion, we focused on Ephesians 1:17-19. In kind, our prayer for our students is that

“[t]he God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe…”

CHILDREN, BIBLE AND THEOLOGY

A new course in the BTh Honours programme entitled, “Children, Bible and Theology” (THE4123) is now available for students interested in this ministry. This course explores the concept of doing theology with “the child in the midst”. This is a relatively new discipline, which urgently demands the church’s attention.

CELEBRATING THE SCHOLARSHIP OF KARL BARTH

Dr Robert Falconer (Academic, SATS) recently attended the International Barth Conference, entitled “Embracing Things Past and Things to Come”, which was hosted at the University of Stellenbosch. Robert remarked that despite the conference revolving around the work of theologian Karl Barth, who has been deceased for half a century, nearly all the research presented was very contextual with a strong focus on social concerns.

According to Robert, there was a very strong sense of friendship and camaraderie even amongst scholars from vastly different theological persuasions. “The conference was surprisingly Christ-centred.”

Dr Falconer connected with many people of interest at the conference, including some SATS alumni.

WELCOMING NEW SATS STAFF

Our ranks have also recently swelled, thanks to the addition of several new Academic staff members and Postgraduate Research Supervisors to the SATS family. A warm welcome to Louie Naidoo, Yvonne Roberg, Gabriel Ndlovu and Godfrey Harold.
