About this course

“Rightly Handling the Word of God” equips students to approach the Bible with confidence, competence, and reverence. The course provides an advanced introduction to the nature, content, and interpretation of Scripture, developing both academic understanding and practical skills for sound exegesis and faithful application. You will learn interpret the Bible in keeping with God’s intended meaning, and to apply that meaning responsibly to your context. By the end of the course, you will be able to handle the Word of God accurately and apply it effectively in Christian life and ministry.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a foundational understanding of what the Bible is, why correct interpretation matters, and how to approach Scripture responsibly using sound hermeneutical principles that respect both divine inspiration and human authorship.

  • Analyse biblical passages within their historical, literary, and theological contexts, distinguishing between the original author-intended meaning and contemporary application through a structured interpretive process.

  • Integrate theological reflection and Spirit-led application by bridging the gap between the ancient and modern contexts, demonstrating how timeless truths of Scripture shape Christian faith and practice today.

  • Apply and synthesise appropriate interpretive strategies for New Testament genres, demonstrating how contextual and canonical awareness lead to faithful exposition and theological understanding.

  • Apply genre-sensitive interpretive principles to diverse forms of Old Testament literature, showing how proper understanding of literary form and redemptive- historical context leads to faithful and relevant exposition.
