Call for Papers  

SATS invites papers from all theological sub-disciplines that explore the interplay between theology, biblical ethics, and the church from a Global South perspective. Moral principles that have guided belief and behaviour in the past are increasingly challenged by a secularised world untethered from a theistic worldview as expressed via the Christian faith. How does a biblically-informed, Christlike, Spirit-empowered, and God-glorifying ethic inform and transform clergy, congregants, communities, countries, and even continents? Papers focussing on these specific aspects are most welcome. 

Possible areas to explore include:   

  • The biblical text and ethics  
  • Biblical ethics and Agenda 2063   
  • The UN’s sustainable development goals and biblical ethics 
  • Biblical ethics in a Covid-19 and post-Covid-19 pandemic world 
  • Transhumanism and biblical ethics 
  • Biblical ethics and the treatment of the disabled by the church 
  • Research methodologies and biblical ethics 
  • Biblical ethics for the African church 
  • Eschatology and biblical ethics 
  • Biblical ethics and worldview 
  • Online biblical ethics (digital ecclesiology) 
  • Biblical ethics, children, and youth in the African church 
  • Eco-theology and human flourishing 

All submissions will be reviewed by a Selection Committee. The decision of the Selection Committee is final, and the Committee is not obligated to provide any explanation for its ruling. The papers presented will be considered for publication in Conspectus, the journal of the South African Theological Seminary (see here).  

Student Papers  

The conference will also feature select student papers. These sessions will showcase emerging researchers at master’s and doctoral levels, including recent graduates. Post-graduate students and recent graduates are therefore encouraged to submit abstracts for consideration.  

Application and Registration  

Abstracts are to be submitted electronically on or before the 16th of January 2023. Click here for the electronic submissions form. Prospective participants will need to provide:  

  • a provisional title  
  • an abstract of 250–300 words  
  • relevant keywords  
  • a short Curriculum Vitae (a link to a profile on Researchgate.net, Academia.edu, or Orcid.org is preferred)  
  • a bio of 150 words
