NTS4240 New Testament

New Testament Studies provides students with advanced skills in exegetical analyses, theological construction, and pastoral critical reflections skills to enable them to make fruitful contributions to the Christian Church, scholarly guild, and academy and the society at large. The postgraduate honours degree in general serves a three-prong purpose.

• For some, it offers an opportunity to dig deeper into fascinating concepts and ideas or further develop skills they acquired from their undergraduate degree.

• For others, it sharpens their cognitive insights and practical abilities as they serve in different capacities of ministry in an increasingly complex world.

• And yet for a third group, the honours degree is an indispensable bridge to further studies as it lays the foundations for the requisite skills of the academic rigours of postgraduate research.

This BTh (honours) course in the New Testament is designed to meet all three constituencies of students. How the acquired knowledge impinges on contemporary challenges in students’ own contingent contexts serve as anchor points for reflective evaluations of the course outcomes.    

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Demonstrate advanced exegetical skills in the interpretation New Testament texts together with their contextual analyses to show their relevance for contemporary Christian doctrine and practice.

• Demonstrate skills in theological synthesis, analysis, and critical evaluation and effective communication of scholarly ideas in relation to concepts in New Testament Theology

• Tender a 3,500-words Research Report based on a research project on a well-honed context relevant problem in New Testament studies. Student will receive direct guidance in their selection and conduct of the project by the course supervisor(s).
