About this course

Far too many outstanding scholars spend years producing rigorous, insightful research—only to see it fall flat when presented aloud. A brilliant manuscript may be a feast for the eye, but a presentation is a meal for the ear. When scholars read dense text in a monotone, avoid eye contact, or overwhelm listeners with slides, the result is a great academic tragedy: excellent research silenced by poor communication. • This short course exists to break that pattern. As stewards of truth, scholars have a responsibility to communicate clearly, graciously, and persuasively so that their work can truly serve the academy and the Church. Across six focused modules, you will learn to move from reading at an audience to engaging with them, translating complex argumentation into compelling spoken form, and confidently navigating both in-person and online scholarly environments.

Course Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

1: Explain the core philosophical shift from written to oral communication, recognising the difference between reading and listening, and adopting a stewardship mindset toward scholarly presentation.

2: Redesign a research paper for auditory clarity, simplifying structure, using signposting, and adopting active oral style for listener engagement.

3: Develop visually compelling presentation slides that support—rather than distract from—your spoken argument, applying principles of visual rhetoric and cognitive load.

4: Deliver an engaging live presentation, employing effective vocal variety, posture, pacing, note-use, and non-verbal communication.

5: Navigate the scholarly Q&A (“Lion’s Den”) with grace and professionalism, responding with clarity, humility, and confidence.

6: Present effectively in online academic environments, mastering webcam presence, digital tools, audience engagement strategies, and virtual Q&A techniques.
