Counselling

Is the programme for me?

If you are interested in completing a master’s degree for professional designation as a Christian counsellor, then this programme is for you. The MThC Coursework is a structured programme, meaning that students complete a selection of courses, practicum hours, and a research project. Our objective is to produce graduates who are competent Christian counsellors, equipped for ethical Christian counselling praxis. We aim to facilitate the development of people who have mastered the core skills of communicating, presenting, and practising within the field of Christian counselling.

Master of Theology (Counselling Stream)

SATS is pleased to introduce the MTh (Christian Counselling) Coursework programme. The specialisation in Christian counselling started on 1 August, 2026. Candidates are encouraged to apply early in order to complete any required bridging work.

Do I Qualify?
  1. General Admission Criteria

  • Applicants must hold an Honours Degree (NQF Level 8) from an accredited institution.

  • The Honours degree can be in any field (not necessarily theology).

  • An above-average achievement at the exit level.

  • Applicants must demonstrate sufficient theological and counselling readiness as outlined below.

1.1. Theological Readiness Requirements

  • If the honour’s degree is not a theology honours, applicants must complete sufficient bridging study in theology before admission.

  • This may be done through the HCCL if the student has sufficient Christian counselling studies, or the HCCL (Counselling) if the student has neither counselling nor theology.

Applicants must have completed theoretical and practical studies as follows:

  • 96 credits of Christian counselling and coursework including:

Programme structure

The MThC Coursework is a 2½-3-year programme. The first two years will consist of coursework, which covers ethics, neurotheology, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy from a Christian counselling perspective alongside academic, presentation and communication skills essential for setting up a private practice and engaging the field professionally.

How does the MThC Coursework differ from SATS’s other Master’s programmes?

SATS has two other master’s programmes on NQF level 9. Our research-based MTh contains no credit-bearing coursework and culminates in a full thesis. The research journey is individualised and predominantly lies between supervisor and student. The Master of Divinity (MDiv) is tailored for professionals credentialed in other fields who are seeking advanced training for ministry. It consists of 180 credits of coursework across the theological discipline with a 60-credit capstone research project.

In the MTh Coursework, your research journey is plotted along a predetermined selection of courses and culminates in a research project or a portfolio of evidence. As with the research MTh, you specialise in a specific field or sub-discipline (Christian counselling) but the research process is completed simultaneously by a cohort of students.

What will the curriculum look like?

The programme consists of 180 credits, divided into core skills, specialisation courses, and a research portfolio. We require our MThC Coursework graduates to cultivate competency in not only counselling theory and practice but also biblical knowledge. Each cohort will journey through the Bible together, for the duration of their programme.
